Body Building: Cultivating Peace

1244) 1 Thessalonians 5:13 tells us in our English Bibles to “live in peace” but the Greek word for peace here: eiréneuó instructs us to cultivate peace. Let’s think about that. If you’re cultivating soil, you are preparing it to produce the best fruit. You spend time working the soil, adding in nutrients that are

Body Building: Cooperation

1243) Another spiritual exercise we can build into our workout routine is found in 1 Thessalonians 5:13. Paul tells us here to have a “high regard” for those who lead us spiritually. I wasn’t sure exactly what “high regard” meant, so I dug a little further into the Greek use of this word. The word

Body Building: Acknowledgment

1242) Being the first of the year, the New Year’s Resolutions’ industry is at its busiest. So many of us are focused on making better choices for our bodies, but I think it’s easy to forget that we should also be concerned with building up our souls and even the body of the church, as

Can I have a Word?

1241) If I take a moment and think about things people have said to me that I distinctly remember, it would be a mixed bag of good and bad things. I can clearly remember a girl saying to me in the 8th grade that I sucked. I felt so bad hearing this. On the other

The Presence of Comfort

1240) There are so many things out there that are marketed by emphasizing a particular “thing” will bring comfort to your life. Is there any truth in these claims? Perhaps, but I only believe it’s to a certain extent. The problem with this type of comfort is it doesn’t soothe for very long. In the

A Matter of Trust

1239) Working with kids for so many years, I have several “life lessons” that I seek to instill in them. One of them concerns the matter of trust. I tell my students that I trust them until they give me a reason not to. This trust is not limited to the things they tell me,

Images

1238) I have been contemplating the 10 Commandments recently and the second commandment, (Exodus 20:4-6); you know, the one about not making any images to be worshipped has stuck in my mind. I’ve always just kind of skimmed through this commandment because making images to worship is not something I do, but as I have

Incident Reports

1237) Recently, I heard that those in the mental health field are audited frequently to help ensure all is running well and no violations are occurring. Then, I was surprised to hear that if there were only a few incident reports with those who are struggling mentally; the auditors saw this as a red flag.

Simon Says

1236) As I was exposed to figures of speech growing up, I always wondered where the phrases originated. For example, I heard someone say that another person let the cat out of the bag and when I was old enough to reflect; I wished I had some way to learn about its origins. (After all,

People Pleasers

1235) There are several things about myself I really dislike. (OK, there’s more than just several!) I do not like it when people are mad, irritated, ticked off or just plain old don’t like me. I know, can a woman in her late 50s still care about such things? Well, I don’t care as much
