Last Days: Slander

1309) There is a deadly “disease” that lurks in the shadows. Many people have it and don’t know. Some identify the disease in others but don’t diagnose it in themselves. This disease is slander. Slander may start out as an interesting negative tidbit about a person that is shared with another. This negative information often

On the Hunt: Love

1290) In 1972, Dorothy Nolte wrote a poem many of you may remember. It was entitled, Children Learn What They Live. In this poem, Dorothy wrote if children live with criticism, they will learn to condemn. If children live with hostility, they learn to fight. If children live in fear, they learn to be apprehensive.

On the Hunt: Faith

1289) I don’t know how you fare, but as soon as something breaks down and I take it for repair, the warrantee has just expired. Even so, warranties are important and it’s to your advantage that you are acquainted with the terms of this contract. In 2 Timothy 2:22, Paul tells us to pursue or

On the Hunt: Righteousness

1288) In Maine, there is a moose hunting lottery. If you wish to hunt these large awkward animals, you must register your name and hope on the day of the drawing, the officials pull yours. Once you receive your permit, it gives you permission to hunt moose in a designated area. Many who receive their

Tattoos Considered

1287) Getting tattoos these days is common. I’ve seen many of these permanent pictures: animals, flowers, names and more. The thing I’ve always pondered is what do you do if you get someone’s name tattooed on you and then you both part ways, especially in embitterment? I know you can have the ink removed (which

Genuineness

Genuineness 1286) When I taught high school Bible, we had a weekly competition called, “Bible Rivals”. This would be what some of us old-timers called “Sword Drills” when a Bible reference is called out and you try to find it in the Bible as fast as you can. Whoever found the verse first would win

The 10 Year Rule

1285) Anyone who has spent any time with kids knows how frustrating their arguments with each other are. Having a classroom full of tweens, I have my fill of it each day. Sometimes I sit at my desk and just shake my head listening to some things they bicker over. I wish I could say

Cause & Effect: Faithless

1284) As a child, the word faith bothered me. In my young mind, faith was equated with a feeling of assurance. If all my feelings for that moment were positive, then I had faith; if not, I didn’t. I did not understand that faith is a choice, not a feeling. Because faith is a choice,

Cause & Effect: Disowning

1283) I have been working on the prequel to my novel, The Bottle House. It will reveal the backstory of the beloved Chaplain Miller. Though I have written for years, mostly non-fiction, I have enjoyed writing fiction with a purpose. I am not one who believes there is anything wrong with reading for pleasure, but

Cause & Effect: Endurance

1283) “Pick your battles” is a phrase I hear a lot in my teaching job. It’s because there is wisdom in knowing when to take a stand (or hold a kid to something that is in his or her best interests) and when to let something go. 2 Timothy 2:11-13 tells us of another cause
