2579) The word, truth, can be elusive. The definition of this word, to be in agreement with fact or reality (thank you, Merriam-Webster), seems to complicate its meaning. Why?

The first part of the definition, fact, should be black and white. There should be evidence that establishes if something is true, but sometimes, fact is hard for people to recognize, and/or agree with. What is your interpretation of facts?

The second part of the definition, agreement in reality, is less concrete. Whose reality? After all, perception is a powerful thing. Just because you perceive something, does it make it truth?

I can’t answer these questions, but I find something helpful on this subject in John 17:17. Here Jesus said, sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. (ESV)

This tells me that God’s word is truth, both in agreement with facts and reality. To recognize this is an act of faith (as would be true to reject this statement). However, we can test this truth.

Making the choice to follow God’s word, because it is truth, (remember, Jesus said he is the way, the truth, and the life.  John 14:6,) will make our day to day lives richer, less in conflict, and fill with peace. Following the truth of God’s word doesn’t make this life perfect, but it reflects the next life when being in the presence with Absolute Truth. It gives us peace in these days and hope for the next life.
