A Verse of Tension

2450) Because I was raised in a home where I was exposed to the Bible all of my life, I found that I did not question “difficult” verses; I had the faith of a child.

As I grew older, I would notice verses such as Psalm 37:4, Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart, and just kind of skip through it hoping to avoid the seeming tension in this verse and how it applies to my life.

There are so many verses in the Bible which have the same effect on me; Matthew 7:7 for example. Ask, and it will be given to you…

The tension exists within me because of the many times I have asked of God and he did not provide it. After all, isn’t this what God promises me?

Psalm 37:4 helps me answer this question. It says to “delight” in the Lord. Since I know delight isn’t something I can just manufacture, it has to be a result of my relationship with God.

I have only just scratched the surface of this delighting. For example, when I get delayed because I can’t find my keys, I am learning to not focus on my frustrations and instead, focus on the fact that God may have used this “loss” to help me avoid a collision on the road.

Just taking the time to acknowledge this is a form of faith. And in this realization, my desire to know God and trust him is given to me. No tension; just maturity and trust. Delighting in all situations results in my spiritual desire being fulfilled every time.
