Are You Free for Lunch?

920) I had the privilege of attending a Christian college where I had many godly men and women teach me the Bible. One particular one was my favorite, and also the favorite of many others. He was a pastor of a huge church before coming to the college and he taught us the word of God, making it practical and applicable. There were many occasions when I met with him, discussing many things. His attention and guidance played a large role in who I am today.

My last year in college, this professor left to go back to being a pastor, and I missed his classes and conversation. Right before I graduated, the college invited him to come back and do a series of messages for Homecoming. In the office where I worked, I was told that he already had a full schedule, so I knew I could not meet with him. I decided after his first message, to go quickly up to him and welcome him back and say hello. My plan was to not take up any of his time since he would be so busy. When I said hello and started to leave, he asked me, “Are you free for lunch?” I stopped in my tracks in disbelief that this important man of God made time for me. We met the next day and I have a memory I will never forget.

This glimpse into my past illustrates to me an understanding of the lost sheep, coin and son and why the owner dropped everything to look for them. These parables do not say that these lost things are more valuable to the owner, but it speaks of how much he valued each one and will do whatever it takes to find the lost.

If you are feeling alone and that no one cares, remember that God values you and will go out of his way to spend time with you. Luke 15.
