2394) Most of us are familiar with the 10 Commandments, and because of this, we might feel less inclined to study them. So today, I’d like to look at Exodus 20:7; the third commandment.
It reads, thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. (KJV) The Hebrew word for vain here is shav’ and it translates as making something false or worthless.
As I ponder these words, I wonder how I have the ability of making God’s name false or worthless and it occurs to me that every time I, as a professed Christian, act in ways which are sinful, it gives the world a reason to reject God.
Well, if she says she is committed to following God and that’s how she acts, I’m not so sure I want to follow a God who produces disciples like her.
I am aware that Christians cannot be sin-less and this is why we should make amends with God and those who are negatively impacted by our behavior.
This “mending” may come in an apology or a statement that what we did or said was wrong. This reflects on God’s character in a positive way; he forgives and welcomes his children back into a healed relationship. Reflections are worth the effort.
