Who He Is (and Who He’s Not)

2365) If you ask a small child what God is like, they often describe someone like Santa. He is big with a beard. He gives you what you want. He knows when you’ve been good and bad.

Of course, as adults, we know better, but do we? Do we not sometimes think of God like Santa or a genie who gives us three wishes?  Isaiah 40:28, however, tells us a lot about who God really is.

First, Isaiah says, God is the everlasting God. The I AM. He’s always been there. My human mind cannot understand it, but I can comprehend that he has been holding all the universe together forever.

Second, he’s the creator of the entire universe. We humans cannot produce something living from the nonliving. God can. He needs only to speak the words, and it happens.

Third, he does not faint or grow weary. Fainting is when you lose temporary consciousness. God loses nothing. He doesn’t take a break or sleep.

Finally, God understands everything about us. He knows our strengths, weaknesses, our trauma and love. All of this God understands and gives grace and strength as we need it. He might say, “Yippee” when something good happens to us. He is our biggest supporter. Though one day, if you are a child of God, you will experience these things face to face. In the meantime, meditating on these things is beneficial.
