Get Dressed: Gentleness

1219) Grocery shopping isn’t one of my favorite activities. I don’t really mind the opportunity of buying something that I would love to enjoy eating; it’s the number of times I actually move every item in my cart.

Let’s think about that. First, you move the item from the shelf to your cart. Then you move the items from your cart onto the checkout belt. Then you move them after they are bagged back into your chart and move them again from the cart into the car. Finally, you move them from the car into your house. Whew! I’m tired just from writing these sentences.

What makes this entire process a little tricky is when you buy fragile things such as eggs. Moving a carton of eggs this many times is a setup for a mess, but this is the picture that pops up in my mind when I think of gentleness. You must treat the carton of eggs delicately because you know that egg’s substance is fragile. The realization that everyone struggles with something helps us recognize that people all around us have spots that should have the sign “fragile” displayed.

Paul tells us to put on the garment of gentleness. (Colossians 3:12-14.) We have the opportunity and responsibility of wearing this fabric every day, but don’t worry, this outfit won’t get dirty and doesn’t have to wear out.

Dare to wear!
