2528) When you hear the word scales, what do you think of? Do you think of that small apparatus some have in the bathroom which tattles on you from time to time?
Do you think of weighing the fresh fruit you put in a thin plastic bag which almost certainly will split and your fruit goes on a tour of the produce section?
Do you think of our legal system, represented by blind justice?
All of these have run through my mind, and yet there is another scale to add to my gray cells, and it’s found in 2 Corinthians 4:17. It reads, for our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. (ESV)
This is what I see in my mind when I read this verse. I see on one side of the scales images that represent trouble and on the other side; I see heaven and being in Jesus’ presence. The scale isn’t close to being balanced.
My takeaway is whenever the troubles of this life overwhelm me, I can pull up the picture of this scale in my head and be reminded that I cannot even come close to fathoming how good the next life will be and it makes the troubles of this life weigh like a feather.
Choosing to stop and reflect is called faith.
