Getting Even

2216) From time to time, I see my young scholars standing back-to-back trying to figure out who is taller.

It’s amusing to me because I frequently see one of the two standing a little on their toes to make themselves taller.

Though the kids want to seem taller, in the social world, I frequently see (and this includes me at times) people trying to get even. Not one or two inches higher.

When we begin “leveling” by pulling someone down to our course level, it’s easy to think we’re getting even or revenge on others. These actions rarely produce a positive effect.

1 Peter 3:9 tells us not to repay evil for evil (leveling) but, instead, to bless (the Greek word is eulogeó, which means to speak well of) others, specifically those who have done us wrong.

Choosing to get even with those who mistreat us puts us on their level. It is not becoming and will not produce anything good, even if you feel “better” for having done so in the moment.
