An Underused Weapon

2128) When I played basketball, my coaches often taught us plays to use so we could gain an advantage against our competitors. I found the more we practiced these plays, the higher our advantage was.

Similarly, there are things we can do in our Christian walk that will help us stand firm and fight against anything that’s seeking to derail us. One such thing is found in Nehemiah 8:10.

Here, we read, the joy of the Lord is my strength.

When I read this verse, my first response when I was younger was, how can I manufacture a joyful feeling on demand in order to receive this strength?

The answer now becomes clearer. Joy isn’t a feeling (though it can be a result); it’s the faith of knowing that God is my fortress, where I can be safe.

It’s almost as if God is the guard of the fortress and he protects when necessary and allows other difficult things at times, making them an opportunity to strengthen us.

There is great joy, or gladness, knowing I am protected and provided with what I need to defend against difficulties that come my way.

Don’t let joy stay underused.
