1973) It’s interesting to me to watch my young scholars and see what trends are current. One of them lately is they need to have a water bottle of a certain brand, with the name on the side of it near the top. Whenever someone gets a new one, they come in parading it, giving them the feel of fitting in. Before you shake your head, most of us had something we wanted that everyone else had.
The problem I see with this and other such objects is they rarely deliver what the person is seeking. Yes, they get a temporary feeling of belonging, but then objects of value change and they move on seeking to acquire that.
I think of this when I read John 7:37. Jesus tells a group of people he has something for them that will last. He tells them if they get a drink from him, they will be satisfied; unlike the temporary water of this life.
There are so many things, that are within arm’s reach, so it makes it easy to grab the temporary. Why not take the eternal gift Jesus offers? This will satisfy.
