2327) My experience with fishing isn’t much. I did some in my childhood and then some since we moved to Maine. I do enjoy it, but it reminds me of an evening, perhaps 20 years ago, when my husband and I drifted in a boat on Grand Lake Stream.
That evening, the conditions for fishing were perfect. Insects hovered over the water, and fish jumped to feed on them.
We were casting lines and fighting smallmouth bass. One cast had me reeling in a fair-sized fish, and when I brought the fish into the boat, it was hooked on one of the three on the lure.
I reached for the fish to stabilize it so I could remove it, and it jumped, and one of the two free hooks went deep into my hand.
So I was in the boat, in the middle of nowhere, with the fish jumping and the hook moving within my hand. It was not one of my finer moments.
Fishing comes to mind when I read 2 Corinthians 11:13. It reads, For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ.
The word for deceitful in the Greek is dólios, which means advertising the bait and concealing the hook. (biblehub.com).
We need to be very careful in weighing what someone says concerning biblical things. Anyone can take God’s word and make it say anything.
This “weighing” isn’t being petty; it’s being wise. Not unlike getting a second opinion for medical issues. Literal fishing is fun, and examining the bait of those who come in the name of God is important.
