To Distinguish

2244) There have been times in my life when I’ve needed to make a decision between two options where both possibilities had pluses and minuses. This often raised a little anxiety because I didn’t want to make the “wrong” choice.

Psalm 119:169 provides a map of what to do in these types of decisions. It tells us to cry out to God, and he will give me understanding according to your word. (ESV)

The word for understanding in Hebrew has many translations. All of them lean into asking for a distinction and discernment in the matter.

The verse also says, according to your word.

For example. I have been greatly concerned about someone I love tremendously. I have asked God on many occasions what I can do to help. What should I say? What should I do?

Then, a little voice within said, The word of God is quick and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword. (Hebrews 4:12).

I understood that in this case, I don’t need to conjure up any insightful advice. I don’t need to try to “rescue” them. All I need to do in this case is fight for this person using only the words of God. What will be accomplished by this? I don’t know, but I do know God directed me in what to do using his own words. I had my answer.
