Sacrifice Comes in Different Packages

2240) The historic event recorded in Luke 21:1-4 has always encouraged me. It’s a report of the rich putting their gifts into the offering box that was in the temple.

Matthew 6:2 tells us that the rich in Jesus’ day (including the pharisees) would “sound the trumpet” when giving.

In the temple, there were metal funnels you would toss your coins into, and they were collected below it in a box. If you wanted people to know you were giving a lot, you’d toss a bunch of coins in at once.

The pharisees, and probably others as well, would get an abundance of lowest value coins to make a greater sound; sounding the trumpet.

Jesus goes on to tell us in Luke that a poor widow put in two small coins and he said what she gave was of much higher value than the rich.

I certainly think this passage is teaching us that sacrifice comes in different packages; this poor widow being one of them.

There are other ways to make sacrifices. When you choose to keep to yourself something you’d love to say but would not be helpful in the moment.

Or you can volunteer to use your God-given gifts in areas where there is little pay or acknowledgment.

There are many opportunities to give to God. You don’t have to be rich to do this.
