Finish not Win

2021) I am competitive, and this can be a good thing. It means I work hard in order to come out near or at the top. Whoever I represent (including myself) will benefit from my hard work.

BUT, competitiveness can be a weakness. Sometimes it makes me forget what is truly important and I meld being “first” with my self-esteem. If I don’t come in first, it feels like I am worthless (or less worthy) and a loser.

Coming from these thoughts, I read 2 Timothy 4:7 in a different light. Paul says here he finished the race and kept his faith. It does NOT say he won the race.

It’s easy to place a value on finishing first and yet faithfulness can be far more valuable.
